South Africa unexpectedly humbled my French-Cameroonian food pride.
Let’s be honest, I didn't eat anything crazy but so yummy and delish 😋
In 2002, I went hard: impala, wildebeest, zebu, buffalo, ostrich, crocodile or alligator… can't remember.
This year of 2026, I stick to chicken and fish. But everything I got was sooo delicious! It was a 14 out of 10!
Let me sum up some of our meals because if I list everything, this article will count 3 pages at least!
We started with the legendary Nando’s! I can't remember the last time I went to Nando’s in Rosebank, so I felt very emotional 🥲. My friends had some fiesta and half chicken. I had empañadas, mac&cheese and a chicken sandwich.
The next day, our host suggested us the “Pata Pata” in Maboneng. I can't describe or explain how flavorful the food was! One of us got an ostrich carpaccio that she truly loved.
As a Cameroonian descendant, I love to brag about the fact that Cameroon has the best food in the whole continent but I forgot how South Africa is out of anyone's league food wise! Since they have a very different climate from the rest of Africa, and their less glorious part of History, that created a very diverse culinary culture; they could really play with cooking and design unique recipes.
Our next stop was the Alto 234, the highest rooftop of Africa! 57th floor, 234m from the ground. You pay your entrance and get a glass of Moët & Chandon. The view is breathtaking and since it was Winter time, we were sitting next to firepits. We had Asian and Mexican food and everything was freshly handmade! I saw them rolling the dumplings!!!!! And the dessert was also succulent! Some yuzu white chocolate ice-cream 😍
On the next day, we headed to that very recommended restaurant/ bakery “Afro-Boer" in Pretoria. I’m telling you that it was worth the trip! It’s a very charming place with a beautiful garden. You have the bakery then the restaurant. Very country chic vibes. You have chickens as neighbors who chill with you inside of the restaurant and even sit on empty chairs! It was so fun! And let me tell you something: these guys (the chickens) are different! They look like they have hair and not feathers! They looked like the just came from the hairdresser and humidity got to them! And of course I became friends with them!
Back to the food… It was absolutely a dream for our taste buds! And it was extremely difficult to choose… So difficult that we bought some food to take away…
And we headed to Ce LA Vi in Sandton. A lounge where they were showing the game Congo vs Argentina. We were viiiibing! I had one of the BEST risotto in my entire life! South Africans don't play with cooking! I couldn't believe how tasty it was and my friends couldn't let me eat in peace because they were constantly picking in my plate!
Then went to the resort in Magaliesberg but I was way too busy enjoying the activities to take pics and vids so you’ll just do with what I have.
Oh… and for each activity with the resort, we had snacks. I didn't really question the meat, I just ate it and it was worth trying. No regrets at all!
Our breakfasts, lunches and dinners were always on point!
On my birthday, we went somewhere that I talk about in another article, but what I can share right now is the wonderful brunch and the outstanding view!
I had many birthday cakes from different locations. I felt so blessed. All of them were pretty good and i’m pretty judgmental bday cakes-wise!
Oh… I forgot to mention that I drank A LOT OF strawberry juice! It became a new addiction of mine!
South Africans are REALLY good with breakfasts, lunches, snacks, teatime, dinners, bakery… Pretty impressive! You won't be disappointed if you go there for food purposes 😉
Everyday my eyes were going out of their orbits because I as tasting something new and delish!
