Stop treating your life like a waiting room
“No, but I’ll do that when I have enough money…”
“I’ll go there when I have the right partner to go with…”
“I’ll change when I lose some weight…”
And the list is long.
You! Yes, YOU! Always have 10,000 reasons for not taking control of your life and doing what you really want to do.
Your life will NOT change until YOU change. And until you do, you’ll just sit there, contemplating other people’s lives, complaining about them, envying them, feeling jealous of what they have, while you freeze when it comes to making any moves of your own.
Trust me, I’ve been there.
There’s ALWAYS a great reason for NOT doing what needs to be done to improve your life.
And then I’ll hear: “Yeah, but it’s not that easy…”
Nobody said it would be.
And sometimes, you’d be surprised by how many things are actually easier to change than you think. You just have to start.
I heard something not too long ago from Jillz Guerin, and someone else, whose name I unfortunately can’t remember, that really stuck with me:
“Stop treating your life like a waiting room.”
YOUR life is NOT a waiting room for a doctor’s appointment.
You can’t just sit there watching YOUR TIME/ YOUR LIFE passing you by.
You are not unlimited on Earth. You have an expiration date. And you will never get back all those moments you decided to spend waiting for Life to change, when YOU are supposed to be the change.
Most of the time, we tell ourselves little white lies so we can stay in a terrible comfort zone: one that keeps us where we know and feel safe, but probably hate.
Not everything requires all the perfect conditions you keep telling yourself you need.
You can start smaller, messy, imperfect; without having it all figured out.
Like an ex of mine once said:
“In NYC, we do, then we figure it out.”
Probably the best thing that this mofo ever said!
So basically, if you don’t have that perfect body, you’ll stay frustrated and never enjoy your life?
If you don’t have the money you think you need, you’ll never start that business? As if you can’t start at step one?
If you don’t have the right partner, you won’t travel at all?
You’ll never have that romantic dinner because you’re waiting for your prince/ princess to show up? PLEASE!!!
If you’re waiting until you feel completely ready, you might be waiting forever.
And while you’re waiting, Life goes on.
I know a lot of people, for example, who have wanted to go to NYC for over 20 years and still haven’t made it happen because they decided they had other priorities.
But here’s the thing:
The NYC they dreamed about discovering 20 years ago is NOT the NYC that exists today.
And they might actually be disappointed when they finally go there for the first time because Life isn’t static; neither is NYC! NYC has changed because its population has changed, its government has changed, its mayors have changed, its trends have changed, its cultures have changed etc.
The world doesn’t pause while you’re waiting. You decide to wait, not us! We keep moving baby!
People change. Places change. Opportunities change. You change.
And when you finally decide you’re ready, you might discover that the thing you spent 20 years waiting for doesn’t even exist in the same form anymore, and you’ll be freaking disappointed.
That’s the danger of treating your life like a waiting room.
The actual cost of waiting: sometimes you don't just lose time; you lose the version of the experience you were waiting for.
So, what are you waiting for?
Not the big, scary, life-changing thing but start with the thing you’ve been postponing for months, or even years, because you keep telling yourself you need more money, more time, a better body, the right person, more confidence, or the “perfect” moment.
What’s one thing you’ve been treating like a waiting-room situation?
Maybe it’s time to stop waiting.
Do it. Then figure it out.
Aight, I’m out ✌🏽🎤🫶🏽
